Human Rights Organization Hengaw Accuses Court-Appointed Lawyer of 'Cleansing the Islamic Republic's Show Trials'

The human rights organization Hengaw on Monday, April 22, questioned the claims made by the court-appointed lawyer of Saman Yasin, accusing him of 'cleansing the show trials of the Islamic Republic' and calling for the revocation of his law license. Hossein Sartipi, the lawyer for Saman Saidi (Yasin), announced on Sunday, April 21, that the Tehran Revolutionary Court had sentenced this political prisoner to five years of exile in one of the cities in Kerman province after 18 months of temporary detention. However, Hengaw claims to have obtained documents indicating that this political prisoner has been explicitly sentenced to five years in prison and 'banishment' in addition to exile. In a statement, the human rights organization wrote: 'The news of Saman Yasin's exile sentence was intentionally published in an unclear and incomplete manner by his court-appointed lawyer, and the explicit sentence of banishment was not mentioned in the report, which means the inability to communicate and socialize with others. There is concern that Saman Yasin will spend his entire prison term in solitary confinement and be deprived of the right to visit his family.' Hengaw continued in its statement: 'We believe that Saman Yasin's lawyer has deliberately misreported the issued punishment to reduce public pressure and sensitivities regarding this imprisoned artist's case and to cleanse the show trials of the Islamic Republic. Although this act by the court-appointed lawyer is part of the overall policy of the Islamic Republic's security apparatus and constitutes betrayal of the client and violation of oath, the punishment for it is the revocation of the law license.'
