Human Rights Organization: Judicial Officials of the Islamic Republic Executed at Least 767 Citizens in 2023

A human rights organization reported in its annual human rights status report for 2023 in Iran that "at least 767 citizens, including 21 women and two children," were executed. The exact statistics of executions are not officially announced by the Islamic Republic, and the reported figure is only what human rights activists in Iran have been able to gather and document. According to the report by the human rights activists in Iran, out of the at least 767 executions carried out in the past year, seven were public executions, and among those executed were 21 women and two children. Based on the report from HRAna, during this period, at least "172 others" were sentenced to death, and five of them were sentenced to "public execution." During this period, the preliminary death sentences of 49 individuals were also confirmed by the Supreme Court of the Islamic Republic. According to this human rights organization's report, the military forces of the Islamic Republic shot at least 540 citizens in the past year, resulting in the deaths of 129 of them. According to the annual report of the human rights activists in Iran, among the 129 citizens killed in the past year due to military shootings, 29 were fuel carriers and 29 were border porters (kolbars). According to this annual report, "411 citizens were injured due to indiscriminate shootings by military organizations; of these, 353 were kolbars, 33 were ordinary citizens, and 25 were fuel carriers." According to data obtained from 10,133 registered reports in the Iranian human rights activists' organization, from the first day of Farvardin 1402 until the 25th of Esfand of the same year, "3,187 citizens" were arrested based on "ideological or political grounds or in clear violation of human rights principles," and "672 arrests were also related to individuals' lifestyles." HRAna, the news agency of this human rights organization, announced that in the past year at least one amputation sentence was issued, and two amputation sentences were executed, with over five thousand lashes sentenced to Iranian citizens in various courts, and at least 442 lashes executed. According to this report, "160 lashes were executed in public." On the other hand, Javaid Rehman, the UN Special Rapporteur for monitoring the human rights situation in Iran, reported on Tuesday, 28 Esfand, in his final report to the UN Human Rights Council, about a 43% increase in executions in 2023 and the continuation of the concerning human rights situation in Iran.
