Hundreds Dead and Injured Following Tsunami in Sunda Strait, Indonesia

The eruption of the Krakatoa volcano and the occurrence of a tsunami in the Sunda Strait, between the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean, left dozens dead and destroyed hundreds of residential structures on Saturday. On Sunday, January 2, Indonesian officials confirmed the deaths of at least 168 people. A spokesperson for the National Disaster Agency stated that over 740 people were injured and dozens remain missing. The Sunda Strait is located near Jakarta and connects the Java Sea in the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean. Reports indicate that the most damage and casualties were reported in Banten, a small province on the island of Java located east of the Sunda Strait. Several tourists present at the site provided accounts of the events via social media. A Norwegian tourist wrote on Facebook that while fleeing, he saw the sea water surge up to 20 meters inland: 'The next wave hit my hotel and overturned parked cars along the road.' This tourist noted that he managed to escape the tsunami's center with his family, and local residents were helping them. Indonesian publications, citing the country's disaster agency, urged people to avoid approaching the coastline. According to this agency, they are investigating the possibility of further tsunamis. In 'Port Lampung,' hundreds of citizens were forced to leave their homes and seek refuge in government offices. The Indonesian archipelago is home to dozens of active volcanoes, is prone to severe earthquakes, and experiences tsunamis and other natural disasters frequently. Four months ago, during a severe earthquake and tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi Island, over 2,500 people lost their lives.
