Hundreds of Marches Held in Support of Gun Control in the U.S.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched on Saturday, March 24, in dozens of cities across the United States and other countries in support of stricter gun control laws in the United States. According to reports, the organizers of this large march had previously expressed hope that half a million people would participate in the largest gathering of its kind in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. On Saturday, more than 800 marches were held in several cities in the U.S. and other countries, where participants called for changes in gun ownership laws to implement stricter controls. According to the Associated Press, thousands of these marchers gathered in protest against gun control laws near the U.S. Capitol in Washington. Organizers of the gathering stated that this march was a decisive moment in the heated and extensive discussions within the U.S. regarding gun control. The mentioned marches also bolster the statements of supporters advocating changes in gun control laws in the United States, who say that the American nation is ready to implement comprehensive changes in gun control laws. This series of protests, held under the title 'March for Our Lives,' was led by survivors of a recent massacre at a school in Florida, an event that reignited public outrage over the high rates of shootings in America. Following the shooting at a high school in southern Florida that occurred in late February last year, at least 17 people were killed. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, had previously been expelled from the school for 'disciplinary reasons.' Reports indicate that he surrendered to police without resistance shortly after the shooting. This is not the first time that a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, has sparked such a reaction and drawn thousands to the streets. Previously, thousands of American students had walked out of their classrooms across the United States on March 14, 2018, in protest against armed attacks on schools, demanding changes in laws related to the sale and ownership of firearms. Students from Parkland High School in Florida were also among the half a million who gathered on Pennsylvania Avenue near the Capitol in Washington on Saturday. Recent polls indicate a potential shift in public opinion across the U.S. due to the experience of dozens of school shootings in the country. Meanwhile, on the other side, staunch supporters of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution view the right to bear arms and the free sale of firearms as a human right and oppose any form of control in this regard. At the same time, the results of a public poll indicate that 69% of Americans support stricter gun laws in the United States. This figure was about 61% in 2016 and estimated at 55% five years ago in 2013.
