Hunger Strike of Dozens of Political Female Prisoners in Evin on the Second Anniversary of 'Women, Life, Freedom'

Thirty-four political female prisoners in Evin prison have gone on hunger strike to commemorate the second anniversary of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini's death while in custody of the morality police. An Instagram account associated with Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and political prisoner, reported on Sunday, September 16, that 'political-ideological female prisoners in Evin have once again gone on hunger strike to voice their solidarity with the protesting people of Iran against the repressive policies of the government.' Previously, on the eve of the second anniversary of the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests, a number of female political prisoners gathered and chanted slogans. This gathering took place on the evening of Saturday, September 15, in the women's section of Evin prison, where prisoners chanted protest slogans and sang songs. The Bidarzani website and Narges Mohammadi's social media accounts have released an audio file capturing the voices of the prisoners chanting and singing. Reports indicate that these female prisoners, who have been participating in the 'No to Execution Tuesdays' campaign alongside other political prisoners in various Iranian prisons for over six months, also chanted 'The women’s section of Evin stands united and committed until the abolition of the death penalty' during the Saturday evening gathering. The 'Women, Life, Freedom' movement is described as the most extensive and profound protests by the Iranian people against the Islamic Republic, sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police on September 16, 2022, and despite severe government repression, these protests continued for several months across the country.
