Hunter Biden Accepts All Charges in Tax Evasion Case

Hunter Biden, the son of the President of the United States, made a surprising move by admitting to federal tax crimes. On Thursday, September 6, during a federal court session held in Los Angeles, he stated that he accepts all nine charges against him in this case. The charges relate to failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019. According to Judge Mark Scarsi, Hunter Biden could face up to 17 years in prison and a $459,000 fine. Previously, Hunter Biden had denied the tax evasion charges, but during the first session of court on Thursday, he proposed using the so-called 'Alford plea,' which prosecutors opposed. Under U.S. law, an Alford plea allows a defendant to plead guilty while maintaining their innocence. However, during the continuation of the court session on Thursday, Abe Lowell, Hunter Biden's attorney, informed the judge that despite having no prior agreement with prosecutors for a reduced sentence, his client admits to his crime. After the court, Hunter Biden stated in a release that he confessed to his crime to spare his family from the embarrassment of a trial that could reveal shameful details of a period in his life marked by drug addiction. He added that he has paid his taxes. Mr. Biden's lawyer indicated the possibility of an appeal against the ruling but did not respond to reporters' questions about why he waited until the day of the trial to confess. Hunter Biden's surprising action prevented his trial, which could have lasted several weeks during a peak election campaign period. He has openly discussed his efforts to overcome drug and alcohol addiction. According to the allegations in the indictment, he is accused of evading taxes while spending large sums on drugs, sex workers, luxury hotels, and various cars and clothing during the years 2016 to 2019. Hunter Biden has also been convicted in another case for illegally purchasing a firearm while under the influence of drugs, and his sentence is currently under appeal in Delaware. Another case against him involves allegations of financial corruption during his dealings with a Ukrainian gas company and a private equity fund in China. The White House has previously stated that Joe Biden, the President of the United States, will not pardon his son if he is convicted in court. The Alford plea is named after a defendant named Henry Alford from North Carolina, who in 1970 brought the case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Alford confessed to 'second-degree murder' to avoid the death penalty while still claiming his innocence. The U.S. Supreme Court later ruled that this did not violate the Constitution. According to the Associated Press, although Alford plea forms are publicly available in most U.S. states, agreements with prosecutors for confessions in exchange for reduced sentences are more common. In recent years, two cases of using this mechanism have been reported; one in 2018 in Tennessee and another in 2011 in Arkansas.
