Hurricane Irma Claims at Least Three Lives in Florida

Following the arrival of Hurricane Irma in southern Florida, electricity has been cut for 1.3 million residents. Reports indicate that at least three people have died due to the hurricane in Florida. Hurricane Irma reached Florida with winds of 215 kilometers per hour. Two days earlier, Irma swept through the Caribbean at a speed of 295 kilometers per hour, resulting in at least 22 fatalities. Reuters reports that Irma is one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the Atlantic, with wave heights currently reaching 4.6 meters along the western Florida coast. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated in a video message on Sunday regarding Irma, "We have never seen anything like this... We will do everything we can to save lives and help those in need." Rick Scott, the Governor of Florida, expressed deep concern on Sunday to Fox News about the western Florida coasts, which include the cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg. The devastating Hurricane Irma has swept through the southwestern Florida coast and is now moving northward. According to MSNBC, strong winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour, along with heavy rains, passed through the "Keys" islands in southwestern Florida on Sunday morning and are now reaching Tampa Bay and Fort Myers. Irma is currently classified as a Category 4 hurricane and may soon reach Category 5, which is the most severe and dangerous classification for hurricanes. Rainfall in some areas of the Keys has reached half a meter, and similar amounts are expected in Miami Beach and Orlando. The New York Times reports that Florida officials had urged over 6.5 million residents to evacuate their homes, marking the largest emergency evacuation order in U.S. history. More than 500,000 residents of coastal cities in Georgia have also been advised to seek safe areas. The states of Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina have also declared states of emergency.
