IAEA Director General Calls for Dialogue Between Trump and Iran

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, on Wednesday, January 23, urged the Trump administration and Iran to engage in dialogue to advance nuclear negotiations. Grossi emphasized at the World Economic Forum in Davos that dialogue is "absolutely essential" and that no progress will be made without it. He noted that there are signs of readiness for dialogue and the possibility of reaching some form of agreement based on statements from Donald Trump and officials of the new U.S. administration. According to Grossi, Iranian officials also acknowledge the need for dialogue. He added that Iran's nuclear program has significantly advanced in terms of capabilities, facilities, and nuclear material stocks since 2021. The IAEA chief announced that Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium at 60% purity has increased to 200 kilograms. He stated that this amount brings Iran close to the 90% level needed for weaponization. According to the agency's criteria, if Iran continues its enrichment activities, it will have enough uranium to produce five nuclear bombs. Grossi added that the Islamic Republic's acceleration of 60% enrichment has increased Iran's production in this area sevenfold. Marco Rubio: The U.S. is seeking to restore the trigger mechanism against Iran. On Tuesday, Grossi also stated in a Q&A session in Davos that Iran's nuclear activities have progressed to such an extent that the JCPOA in its current form is no longer "effective" and a new framework needs to be considered. He added that to prevent another conflict in the Middle East, Iran must reach an agreement with the Trump administration regarding its nuclear program. Grossi also expressed hope that he could meet with officials from the Trump administration "very soon." Meanwhile, according to Reuters, the UN Secretary-General stated on Wednesday in Davos that Iran must take the first step toward improving relations with regional countries and the U.S. and clarify that its goal is not to produce nuclear weapons. Antonio Guterres stated that the most important question regarding Iran and its relations is concerning Israel and the U.S. He expressed hope that Iranian officials would clarify "once and for all" that they are not pursuing nuclear weapons and that they have "constructive interactions" with other regional countries. Guterres said this step is important for peace and stability in the region, and the first step must come from Iran; otherwise, the world faces the risk of escalating tensions. The statements from the IAEA Director General and the UN Secretary-General came two days after Donald Trump's inauguration and return to power in the U.S. Trump had previously pulled the U.S. out of the global powers' nuclear deal with Iran during his first term, calling it "the worst deal he had ever seen." Marco Rubio, who began his role in the new Trump administration on January 22, has been a staunch critic of the JCPOA over the past decade. Senator Ted Cruz, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, stated on Tuesday that Rubio has written to the committee expressing support for the return of the trigger mechanism by the UN Security Council against the Islamic Republic of Iran, believing it aligns with the "national interests" of the United States. France, Germany, and Britain recently expressed deep concern in a letter to the Security Council regarding the IAEA's latest report on Iran's enrichment level at 60% purity and warned Tehran about the use of the "trigger mechanism," which would reinstate international sanctions against Iran.
