IAEA Director General Warns: Do Not Ignore Iran's Nuclear Ambitions

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), urged world powers to resume nuclear negotiations with the Islamic Republic and not to forget the "dangers posed by Iran's accumulation of enriched uranium" while attention is focused on the Israel-Hamas war. In an interview with the Financial Times published on Thursday, December 9, he stated that the "dialogue system with Iran" needs to be revitalized. He remarked, "Attention... may of course be directed elsewhere. But this does not solve the issue. It may even exacerbate it... People may not pay attention to [the Islamic Republic's nuclear ambitions], but the problem exists." Tensions between the Islamic Republic and the West have escalated following Hamas's devastating attack on Israel on October 7. The Islamic Republic supports Hamas and several anti-Israeli and anti-Western militia groups, which are effectively proxies of the Islamic Republic throughout the region. Grossi indicated that negotiations with the Islamic Republic may require "a new framework; not an attempt to revive the JCPOA." He added, "Efforts to revive [the nuclear agreement] within the framework of the JCPOA will not be effective. You can still call it a JCPOA, but it should be JCPOA-2 or something similar." He also stated that the situation surrounding the Islamic Republic's nuclear program is "very unclear" and called on countries to "sit down and engage again." Five days before Grossi's recent statements, AFP reported that Western powers are reluctant to take a hard line against the Islamic Republic. The news agency wrote: "Western powers, fearing an escalation of Middle Eastern tensions while the Islamic Republic advances its nuclear program and simultaneously reduces cooperation with the IAEA, are unwilling to take a hard line against the Islamic Republic." According to this report, while the IAEA Board of Governors states that the Islamic Republic's recent actions have "shifted unprecedented boundaries," it has refrained from issuing a binding resolution.
