IAEA: Iran Provided Information on Remaining Issues

On Saturday, August 15, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that it had received information and documents from Iran regarding outstanding issues related to the country's past nuclear program. According to Reuters, the IAEA stated in a release: 'In line with its commitments under the roadmap agreement, Iran today provided written explanations to clarify outstanding issues regarding past and present activities of its nuclear program.' Meanwhile, Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, also stated on Saturday: 'According to the timeline agreed with the Agency, Iran has submitted its documents and responses regarding past activities or potential military dimensions and has adhered to the timeline it committed to.' According to IRNA, Kamalvandi further noted: 'Based on the contract between Iran and the Agency, questions will be answered, and ultimately the case will be closed, while maintaining our red lines.' The spokesperson mentioned that Iran had fulfilled its obligations to submit documents and responses related to potential military dimensions to the Agency by August 15 (24 Mordad). Iran signed a side agreement with the IAEA alongside the nuclear deal with six world powers in Vienna on July 14, aimed at addressing remaining issues and clarifying potential military dimensions of its nuclear program. According to Reuters, under the agreement between Iran and the Agency, the IAEA can request additional information from Iran regarding potential military dimensions of its nuclear program by October 15 to prepare its final report on the military aspects of Iran's nuclear program. Several members of the U.S. Congress have previously criticized the IAEA for not disclosing the contents of the 'roadmap' agreement. According to Reuters, Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator and chairman of the committee overseeing U.S. funding to the Agency, has threatened that Washington will halt its funding to the Agency until it is compelled to provide the text of the side agreement with Iran to Congress. In this context, the spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran on Saturday praised Yukiya Amano, the IAEA Director-General, for keeping the content of the agreement between Iran and the Agency confidential.
