IAEA: Iran's Heavy Water Stockpile Slightly Exceeds Permitted Limit

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that Iran's heavy water stockpile is slightly above the limit specified in the Vienna nuclear agreement, but Tehran intends to export some of this stock to another country. This report, dated Wednesday, November 10, appears to be 'classified,' but the Associated Press has claimed to have obtained a copy. According to this news agency, the IAEA has determined that Iran's heavy water stockpile is 100 kilograms above the permitted limit. Under the nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, the maximum amount of heavy water that Iran can store is 143.3 tons. Heavy water can be used in the production of plutonium, a material that can facilitate the development of nuclear weapons. However, the IAEA report states that Tehran has announced its intention to export five tons of its heavy water stockpile to another country, which has not yet been named. In this context, the German news agency quoted a diplomat familiar with the details of the nuclear agreement's implementation, without naming them, stating that the export of this amount of Iran's heavy water stockpile is likely to occur 'within a few days.' Last month, Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the IAEA, stated that since the implementation of the nuclear agreement, Tehran has adhered to all its commitments, with the only exception being the increase in Iran's heavy water stockpile in February. At that time, Iran's heavy water stockpile was reported to be 0.9 tons above the permitted limit, which has now decreased by 0.8 tons. In this regard, Iran has protested to the IAEA regarding the 'leakage of classified documents' of the nuclear agreement. The IAEA denied the leakage of the 'classified document' of the nuclear agreement with Iran. The European Union has called for Iran to provide information on the manufacturing of centrifuge parts. Iran's response to the Associated Press report was that it had not received any requests from the European Union regarding rotors.
