Immediate Result of Trump's Tariff; Mexico Agrees to Deploy Thousands of Soldiers at the Border

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced on Monday a one-month halt on new tariffs on imported goods from Mexico following the country's agreement to immediately deploy 10,000 soldiers along the shared borders of the two countries. Trump stated in a post on the social media platform 'Truth Social' that in a 'very friendly' conversation with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, they agreed to the 'immediate' deployment of these soldiers at the border. According to Donald Trump, the special mission of these soldiers will be to prevent the influx of fentanyl and illegal immigrants into the United States. The presidents of the United States and Mexico also agreed to hold negotiations involving senior U.S. government officials, including the Secretaries of State, Treasury, and Commerce, and Mexican officials, with a one-month pause in the tariffs imposed by the U.S. on imported goods from Mexico. Trump concluded his brief statement by expressing eagerness to participate in these discussions with his Mexican counterpart to achieve a 'deal' beneficial for both countries. Claudia Sheinbaum also posted on X media stating that in the 'good' conversation she had with Donald Trump, both sides agreed that Mexico would 'immediately' deploy 10,000 members of its National Guard to prevent the influx of drugs, especially fentanyl, at the northern borders, while the United States would address the trafficking of 'powerful' weapons to Mexico. The two countries would begin negotiations on security and trade today, and the implementation of the imposed tariffs would be paused for one month. Earlier, on Saturday, February 1, Trump had imposed a 25% tariff on imported goods from Mexico and Canada and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods via an executive order. Canada is the largest export market for 36 U.S. states, and Mexico is the largest trading partner of the United States. According to Reuters, Canada announced that in response to Trump's new tariffs, it would impose a 25% tariff on a range of imported goods from the U.S. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, warned Americans on Saturday that Trump's actions would have real consequences for them. The Prime Minister's office stated that he and the President of Mexico agreed to strengthen the strong bilateral relations between Canada and Mexico following Trump's announcement of the tariffs. Meanwhile, the Chinese government also announced that it would take action to defend its economic interests and intends to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.
