Fogel's legal team praised Trump and his administration for their efforts, calling his release 'historic' and a testament to 'strong leadership' in America. Trump also told reporters that another individual would be released on Wednesday, February 24, but did not provide details about this person. Following Fogel's release and arrival in the U.S., the Kremlin announced on Wednesday, February 24, that a Russian citizen had also been freed from an American prison. According to the Associated Press, the Kremlin did not provide further details or the identity of the released individual from the U.S., and the White House has not commented on this matter either. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated that this individual would return to Moscow 'in the coming days' and their name would be announced later. Russia released Mark Fogel, an American teacher, after nearly four years of imprisonment during the visit of Trump's special envoy to the country. The White House announced on Tuesday, February 23, that Fogel, who had been imprisoned in Russia since August 2021, was freed following Steve Witkoff's trip to Moscow and left Russia with him. Mike Waltz, the White House National Security Advisor, stated that Trump, his advisors, and Witkoff negotiated an exchange that demonstrates goodwill from the Russians and is a sign of moving in the right direction to end the brutal and horrific war in Ukraine. Mark Fogel was a teacher at an American school in Moscow, which is now closed. He was arrested for possessing 14 grams of marijuana, which he claimed was prescribed to him by a doctor in the U.S., and was sentenced to 14 years in prison on charges of 'intending to sell drugs to students.' Fogel's family expressed their gratitude and surprise at his return home after more than three years. Two days prior, Trump announced that he had spoken with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, but kept the details of the negotiations vague, only emphasizing his determination to end the three-year war in Ukraine. The U.S. President mentioned last week that there has been 'great progress' in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and remarked on the likelihood of negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian officials, stating, 'They want to meet; people are dying every day, young and beautiful soldiers are being killed, young men like my sons are being killed on both sides of the battlefield... The war is very bad for Ukraine. I want to end this damn war.' He also mentioned that he would likely meet with Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, next week and announced that his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia would soon head to Ukraine.
