Imran Khan Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison Ahead of Pakistan's General Elections

A court in Pakistan on Tuesday, January 30, sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 10 years in prison for disclosing state secrets. This ruling was issued just days before the general elections in Pakistan, which are set to begin on February 8. According to Reuters, Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced its intention to appeal the court's decision, which is expected to be formally issued in writing within a day or two. A spokesperson for the party stated, 'This is the heaviest sentence that this former Prime Minister has received so far.' The PTI claimed that the special court found Khan guilty of publicly revealing the contents of a confidential telegram sent by the Pakistani ambassador in Washington to the Islamabad government. Additionally, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the former foreign minister, was also sentenced to 10 years in prison in the same case. This politician had previously been sentenced to three years in prison in October for a corruption case. These rulings have drawn public attention away from him just before the general elections on February 8. Zulfiqar Bukhari, an aide to Khan, told Reuters that the legal team was not given the opportunity to represent him or cross-examine witnesses, and the trial was conducted under maximum security at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Naim Panjota, Khan's lawyer, wrote on the social media platform X, 'We do not accept this illegal decision.' Meanwhile, another of Khan's lawyers, Ali Zafar, told 'IRY' television that given the trial conditions and the ruling, the likelihood of this case being overturned in a higher court is '100 percent.' In this context, Bukhari described the conviction as an attempt to undermine support for Imran Khan. Previously, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who has been in jail since October, lost the opportunity to participate in the general elections on February 8 due to a three-year sentence in a corruption case. Khan's legal team had hoped to secure his release from prison before the elections, but the ruling issued by the special court will disqualify him from the elections even if appealed in a higher court. In response to the special court's ruling, the party of Nawaz Sharif, the current Prime Minister and Khan's main political opponent, stated that the sentence is not harsh enough. Analysts believe that Nawaz Sharif's party is leading in the polls and will form the new government of Pakistan. Imran Khan, 72, was ousted last year after escalating disputes with powerful military leaders in Pakistan who had previously supported his rise to power in 2018. Khan launched an unprecedented struggle against the military system in Pakistan, which has directly ruled the country for decades. The former Prime Minister accused the military of conspiring with U.S. support to oust him, initiating a no-confidence vote against him in parliament, and also claimed they were responsible for an assassination attempt that left him injured. Khan also made accusations against the U.S., but the country denied his claim that the Biden administration sought his ouster from power. Khan's party states that the former Prime Minister has been barred from running in the elections.
