Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, criticized the lack of a decisive response to attacks against American forces in the Middle East, calling for serious action from the United States against the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces. In his Senate speech, McConnell stated, "The Islamic Republic has become emboldened over the past three years and thinks it can use its proxy forces to attack America without suffering any consequences, and in the meantime, the Biden administration sends a message of fear of escalation to Tehran and other enemies of the U.S." He referred to a recent attack on an American base in Jordan that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers, adding, "This heartbreaking tragedy of American casualties must finally awaken this administration from its delusional approach to Iran." The Senate Republican leader also emphasized, "The goal of the United States is not to avoid escalating tensions at all costs. If that were the case, the quickest way to achieve it would be to retreat and hand over the Middle East to the Islamic Republic. Instead, our goal is to maintain American influence in a crucial part of the world and compel the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces to stop attacking American forces and our interests in the region." He urged the Biden administration to take necessary actions to deter the Islamic Republic and report to the Senate on the current situation in the Middle East. President Joe Biden stated on Tuesday that he has made a decision on how to respond to the drone attack that resulted in the deaths and injuries of several American forces in Jordan. Biden did not provide further details about his decision, which was made after consulting with senior White House advisors. He reiterated that the United States does not need a broader war in the Middle East and confirmed other U.S. officials' statements that the U.S. does not seek war with Iran. Pentagon spokesman Gen. Pat Ryder also stated at a press conference on Tuesday that Iranian proxy groups had been warned to stop their attacks, but they ignored the warnings, and therefore, the U.S. will respond. The deadly attack on American soldiers occurred on Sunday, February 8. Biden announced in a statement that three American soldiers stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border were killed and "many" others were injured due to a drone attack by "Iran-backed extremist militia groups." He began his statement with the phrase, "Today, the heart of America is grieving," and clarified, "While we are still gathering facts about this attack, we know it was carried out by Iran-backed extremist militia groups active in Syria and Iraq." The U.S. President further stated that he and First Lady Jill Biden share their grief over the loss of these warriors in this "horrific and unjust" attack alongside the families and friends of the deceased. Biden noted that the victims of this attack represented the best of America, emphasizing their unwavering courage, commitment to their duty, and the sacrifices they made to protect Americans and U.S. allies and partners in the fight against terrorism. The U.S. President asserted, "This is a fight we will not stop." He described the three fallen American soldiers as patriots, stating that their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and "we will honor our sacred commitment to their families." Biden concluded his statement by saying, "We will hold all those responsible [for this attack] accountable in a time and manner of our choosing." U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed early Monday morning the deaths of three American soldiers during the attack on Sunday and reported that 34 others were injured, with the number possibly changing. According to CENTCOM, eight of the injured military personnel who required further care and treatment were transferred out of Jordan, and their condition has been reported as stable.
