Increase in Executions in Iran Over the Past Two Months; Human Rights Organizations Call for Firm Action from the Global Community

Recent statistics indicate that the number of executions in Iran has increased unprecedentedly following the election of Masoud Pezeshkian as the successor to Ebrahim Raisi; human rights organizations have called for firm action from the global community in this regard. The Hengaw Human Rights Organization announced on Wednesday that 'at least 81 prisoners have been executed in the prisons of the Islamic Republic from one day after the presidential elections in Iran until August 8, with 20 of these executions occurring solely in the Qazalhasar prison in Karaj.' This organization deemed the increase in executions by the Islamic Republic in a span of 32 days as 'unprecedented' and requested international officials and human rights organizations to take action to stop the executions and defend the rights of prisoners in Iran. Concurrently, the Iran Human Rights Campaign reported that the number of executions in Iran in the 24 hours leading up to August 8 was 36, emphasizing the severe violation of international laws in these executions and urging the global community to firmly warn the Islamic Republic and halt these illegal executions. Hadi Ghaemi, the executive director of the Iran Human Rights Campaign, stated: 'The executions by the Islamic Republic are state killings that are expanding with disregard for the right to life, the rule of law, and accountability to the global community.' He added: 'All relevant UN bodies and governments around the world must disabuse the officials of the Islamic Republic of the notion that their horrific killings can occur without consequences; otherwise, these executions will accelerate.' The 'HRANA' website, the media organ of the human rights activists in Iran, reported that the judiciary of the Islamic Republic executed at least 22 prisoners en masse on Wednesday, August 8, in the Qazalhasar prison in Alborz province. The Iran Human Rights Organization also emphasized in a statistical report on August 4 that 'the execution machine of the Islamic Republic has once again accelerated,' stating that at least 300 individuals have been executed in Iran in the first seven months of the current calendar year. According to this report, out of the 300 recorded executions in the past seven months, only 28 executions have been announced in the Iranian media or through official sources, while the rest have been confirmed through at least two independent sources related to this human rights organization.
