Increase in Victims of Vehicle Collision with Crowd in Germany; Driver from Saudi Arabia

The number of victims from the incident where a vehicle collided with a crowd at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, has risen to two; local authorities identified the driver as being from Saudi Arabia and reported that the number of injured could rise to 80. German media state that the exact number of fatalities from this act is still unclear, but the driver was immediately arrested and his identity has been confirmed. The vehicle involved in this deadly act has been identified as a dark-colored rented BMW. Following this incident, Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, described the reports from Magdeburg as a 'horrific incident' in a post on social media platform X. Michael Reif, a city official in Magdeburg, referred to the event as a 'terrorist attack,' stating, 'The images are horrifying. According to my information, the car drove into the crowd of visitors. However, I cannot say from which direction it came and how far it advanced.' According to an eyewitness, 'The perpetrator deliberately entered a part of the Christmas market that was decorated with scenes from fairy tales, where many families with young children had gathered.' Magdeburg, located west of Berlin, is the capital of the Saxony-Anhalt state and has a population of about 240,000. Germany has around 2,500 to 3,000 Christmas markets that operate for a month across the country. Previously, in 2016, an Islamist attacker drove a truck into the crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin, resulting in 13 deaths and dozens of injuries. The attacker was killed in a shootout in Italy days later. After that incident, German police took special measures to protect Christmas markets.
