Increased Likelihood of 'Intentionality' in Truck Attack on People in Berlin

The Berlin police stated on Twitter that initial investigations have strengthened the possibility that the truck attack on people at the Christmas market in the German capital was 'intentional.' At least 12 people have died in the truck attack, and dozens have been injured. The Berlin police said, 'Our investigators have now raised the issue that the truck deliberately struck the crowd at the Christmas market in Breitscheidplatz.' They also added that the deceased person found in the truck was Polish and did not have control of the vehicle. Another individual has been arrested, whose identity is still unknown. Reuters has cited German media stating that the arrested person was either 'Afghan' or 'Pakistani' and had entered Germany among refugees in February. Officials have not confirmed any of these reports. The truck involved in the incident had Polish license plates. Polish media, including TVN 24, reported that the owner of the company that operated the truck was a Polish citizen, and the driver was a relative who was returning from Italy. A spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry tweeted that there is currently no information indicating that any of its citizens are being pursued. The newspaper Wyborcza, published in Warsaw, stated that in the past hours, the driver's relatives had not heard from him, and he was not answering his phone. Polish media have suggested based on GPS data that someone may have 'stolen' the truck. The German police stated, 'All investigations regarding the possibility of the attack being terrorist in nature are being conducted with full force and necessary effort.' Previously, the police had asked Berlin citizens not to leave their homes. The incident at the Christmas market in Berlin is reminiscent of an attack carried out last summer by a Tunisian-French individual in Nice, France, which resulted in 86 deaths and was claimed by a group known as the 'Islamic State.' Currently, the death toll from the Berlin incident has reached at least 12, with 48 others injured, some in 'serious' condition.
