Increased Likelihood of War Between Israel and Hezbollah; Erdogan: We Support Lebanon

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, stated that his country stands in solidarity with Lebanon amid rising tensions with Israel and urged regional countries to support Beirut as well. Cross-border tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated in recent weeks, raising concerns about an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah. Hezbollah, which is armed and financially supported by the Islamic Republic, opened a new front in northern Israel following the terrorist attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7. Border clashes across northern Israel have led to tens of thousands on both sides of the border fleeing their homes. According to Reuters, Erdogan, in a speech to lawmakers of the Justice and Development Party in Parliament, claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to expand the Gaza war to the region. Earlier this week, Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Foreign Minister, remarked on the tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, stating that the Turkish government perceives the risk of conflict escalation. Fidan, in response to a question about Hezbollah's threat against Cyprus, a European Union member closely linked to Lebanon, urged Cyprus to stay 'away' from the conflict. In an interview with the private network Haber Turk, Fidan mentioned that Turkey has intelligence reports indicating that Cyprus has become a base for military flights and reconnaissance by certain countries over Gaza. Meanwhile, Israeli forces bombarded several areas across Gaza on Wednesday, with reports of multiple Palestinians killed. Palestinians reported intense nighttime clashes in Rafah in southern Gaza. In western Rafah, armed branches of Hamas and its allied group, Islamic Jihad, stated that their members attacked Israeli forces with anti-tank rockets and mortars. Among the Israeli attacks that resulted in casualties was one near the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Hospital sources reported that on Wednesday, an Israeli attack killed three Palestinians near Jabalia, one of the eight historic refugee camps in Gaza, and injured several others. Hospital sources in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza also reported that shelling of an apartment by tanks left at least five dead and several others injured. The Israeli army also announced in a statement that its forces killed a Hamas militant involved in arms smuggling across the border between Rafah and Egypt. Israel stated it conducted airstrikes on several militant sites in Rafah. In northern Gaza, Palestinians are complaining about severe food shortages and rising prices. Health officials reported that thousands of children are suffering from malnutrition, and at least 30 people have died since October 7. On the other hand, the Associated Press reported that the Israeli army stated a Palestinian who had previously been seen in social media images tied to an Israeli vehicle was not a threat to Israeli forces and was caught in crossfire between Israeli forces and militants. The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, and Israel are among the countries that have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. The U.S. has called on Israel to avoid escalating tensions with Hezbollah. The U.S. Defense Secretary, in a meeting with his Israeli counterpart, stated that they stand with Israel to ensure that the Islamic Republic does not acquire nuclear weapons. Intensified clashes between Israel and Hezbollah; Israel's representative at the United Nations warned that they will pay the price for an all-out war.
