Increasing Threat from Russia and Belarus; Poland to Spend Over Two Billion Dollars on Eastern Border Security

On Saturday, May 18, the Prime Minister of Poland announced the allocation of over two billion dollars for a project to secure the eastern borders of the country in response to the increasing threat from Russia and Belarus. The Polish border with Belarus has been facing an influx of migrants for the past two years, as they seek to reach Western countries. This crisis began when Belarus, a close ally of Russia, opened travel agencies in Middle Eastern countries that offered a new unofficial route to Europe. The European Union has strongly criticized Belarus, accusing it of 'creating a crisis.' Since the onset of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, Warsaw has increased its military budget and accused Moscow and Minsk of attempting to destabilize Poland. Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, stated during a press conference that the country would allocate approximately 2.5 billion dollars to secure its eastern borders, which includes various components such as fortifications that would make it impossible for a 'potential enemy' to cross. He did not provide further details about this project. The previous Polish government constructed a 180-kilometer-long fence at the border with Belarus, which is over five meters high. This fence, equipped with cameras and sensor systems, was built to counter the rising wave of illegal migrants. Earlier this month, Tusk mentioned without details that he intends to strengthen the country's eastern borders. Tusk also stated that on Monday, he would discuss financing for the 'European Sky Shield' satellite project with the European Investment Bank. The European Sky Shield is a joint air defense project initiated by Germany to enhance Europe's air defense.
