Independent Group Report: Anti-Muslim Attacks in America Reach Highest Level in 30 Years

An advocacy group for Muslim rights has released information indicating that discrimination and reported attacks against Muslims and Palestinians in the U.S. reached the highest level in three decades last year. Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing the "Council on American-Islamic Relations," that the number of such complaints in 2023 rose to 8,061, marking a 56% increase compared to the previous year. This is the highest figure since the organization began recording such cases 30 years ago. According to data collected by this independent Muslim rights advocacy group based in Washington, approximately 3,600 of these incidents occurred from October to December, coinciding with the peak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. The President of the United States emphasized on March 16 that Islamophobia has no place in this country, stating that the United States is committed to building a world where people of all religions and backgrounds can live without fear and harassment. Joe Biden also urged Americans in late October, during the early weeks of the Gaza war, to condemn Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, anti-Palestinian threats, and hate speech in the United States that arise due to the war in the Middle East. At the same time, Christopher Wray, the head of the FBI, reported an increase in "threatening rhetoric" against Jewish and Muslim communities within the United States, stating that the agency is rapidly working to reduce such threats. Human rights groups have previously reported a global increase in Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian biases, and anti-Semitism since the onset of the conflicts in the Middle East, which began after the October 7 attack by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas on Israel.
