India and Canada Expel Each Other's Diplomats Amid Tensions

Tensions between India and Canada over the murder of a Sikh leader in Canada have escalated to the expulsion of diplomats from both countries. On Monday, October 15, Ottawa expelled six Indian diplomats, accusing them of involvement in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot dead about six months ago in British Columbia. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, at a press conference, stated that there is clear and compelling evidence that Indian government agents have participated in activities that pose a significant threat to public safety. He listed covert information gathering, violent threats, and even the murder of Canadians of Asian descent as part of these agents' 'ongoing actions.' Trudeau also added that New Delhi has not cooperated with Ottawa since the murder of the Sikh leader, emphasizing that India's actions are 'unacceptable' and represent a 'fundamental mistake' by engaging in criminal activities in Canada. In response, India has long denied Trudeau's accusations and considers the investigation into the Sikh leader's murder as a 'political agenda.' Canada has arrested three individuals in connection with the murder of a prominent Sikh activist. Melanie Joly, Canada's Foreign Minister, who was present alongside Trudeau, emphasized that Ottawa will not allow India or any other country to engage in destructive and threatening actions on Canadian soil. She also stated that Canada has requested the Indian government to revoke the diplomatic immunity of its six diplomats so that Canadian security and intelligence agencies can interrogate them regarding the allegations of criminal activity. Joly pointed out that India's lack of cooperation on this matter led Ottawa to expel these diplomats. In contrast, Indian officials, rejecting Trudeau's statements, claimed they decided to withdraw their diplomats due to 'lack of security.' The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated, 'We do not trust the Canadian government's commitment to ensuring the safety of our diplomats, so we decided to withdraw our High Commission and other diplomats from this country.' This is not the first time in recent months that both sides have expelled each other's diplomats, and tensions between the two countries are rising. Trudeau had previously announced on September 19 that assessments from Canadian intelligence agencies indicate that Indian government agents were involved in the murder of Nijjar. Nijjar was a Canadian Sikh separatist who supported the creation of a separate Sikh state in northern India called Khalistan. The 45-year-old was shot dead on June 18 this year by masked men outside a temple in a neighborhood of Vancouver. Canada has the largest Sikh population outside of their home state of Punjab, and recent protests in the country have angered the Indian government. The United States had also previously announced that Indian agents were involved in a plot to assassinate another Sikh separatist leader in New York last year.
