India Warns Pakistan Over Execution of Citizen Allegedly Abducted from Iran

The Indian government has warned Islamabad about the execution of a citizen it claims was abducted in Iran and transferred to Pakistan. On April 10, a Pakistani military court sentenced the Indian citizen named Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav to death on charges of espionage. Pakistan claims Mr. Jadhav was arrested after entering the Balochistan province through the Iranian border. According to Islamabad, he has been employed by India's Research and Analysis Wing since 2013, an agency that allegedly established an office in the Chabahar region in 2003. At the same time, the Indian government denied the espionage allegations and rejected the claim that this citizen was arrested on Pakistani soil, stating that Jadhav was 'abducted' from Iranian territory. On April 11, Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj condemned what she described as a 'farcical' trial, stating in Parliament that no evidence has been presented against Jadhav. Swaraj warned that the execution could have 'consequences' for relations between the two countries. Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated that Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav, who was in Iran for business, was 'abducted' by Pakistani forces a year ago and accused of espionage. The Pakistani military had previously released a video in which Jadhav 'confesses' to 'years of actions to create tension in Pakistan.' Swaraj mentioned that Pakistan has repeatedly denied consular access to the Indian citizen. On the other hand, NDTV reported that the Indian government has blocked the release of 12 Pakistani prisoners who were supposed to be returned to Pakistan on April 12. Previously, Islamabad had requested Tehran to explain the 'confessions' broadcasted by Mr. Jadhav, claiming he 'confessed to conducting operations from the Chabahar port.' The Iranian embassy in Islamabad stated in a statement last year that the Pakistani media's reports about the arrest of an Indian spy with an Iranian passport 'could have negative consequences' for relations between the two countries. In this context, Pakistan sentenced the Indian citizen 'abducted from Iran' to death.
