Individuals Involved in Undermining Peace, Security, or Stability in the West Bank Will Be Banned from Entering the U.S.

On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the U.S. Department of State will impose visa restrictions on individuals involved in undermining peace, security, or stability in the occupied West Bank. According to Reuters, Blinken said that these restrictions will target those who have committed violent acts or taken other actions that limit civilians' access to essential services and basic needs. He mentioned that U.S. visa restrictions may also apply to family members of individuals who engage in such actions. U.S. President Joe Biden and other senior American officials have repeatedly warned that Israel must take action to stop violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. Such violence has increased following the terrorist group Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel and the abduction of around 240 individuals. The U.S. has designated Hamas as a terrorist organization. Blinken also stated that the U.S. has emphasized to the Israeli government the need for further actions to hold accountable 'extremist settlers who have committed violent attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank.' During his meetings in Israel last week, Blinken reminded Israeli officials that Washington 'is prepared to take action using its authorities.' U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters that the first bans under the new policy would be implemented on Tuesday and will include more individuals in the coming days. He noted that ultimately, visa bans will affect dozens of people. Miller stated that any Israeli with a U.S. visa who is subject to the ban will be informed of the revocation of their visa. Since the Middle East war in 1967, Israel has occupied the West Bank, which Palestinians consider a core part of a future independent Palestinian state. Israel has built Jewish settlements there, which most countries deem illegal. Israel opposes this view, citing its historical and religious ties to the land.
