Intelligence Agencies Report on Iran's Illegal Actions Regarding Weapons of Mass Destruction

A new set of reports from European intelligence agencies indicates that the Islamic Republic of Iran is seeking to circumvent U.S. and EU sanctions in order to acquire the necessary technology for its nuclear weapons program with the aim of 'testing a nuclear bomb.' Fox News reported this on Sunday, citing a report from the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) published on June 23, 2023. The report states that intelligence agencies from the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany released sensitive data in the first half of 2023 regarding Iran's 'illegal proliferation activities' to unlawfully obtain equipment related to weapons of mass destruction. However, MEMRI claims it is 'noteworthy that the media in the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany have largely not reported' on these findings. The Persian section of Voice of America previously reported, citing Reuters, that Germany's domestic security agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, identified Iran as one of the four main countries threatening Germany in terms of espionage. Additionally, MEMRI notes that in one instance, Sweden's Security Service, in its annual report published in February 2023, stated: 'Iran is engaged in industrial espionage primarily targeting Sweden's advanced industries and products that could be used in its nuclear weapons program.' In another part of the MEMRI report, which Fox News also published, the Dutch intelligence service referred multiple times in an April 2023 report to Iran's 'illegal' activities regarding weapons of mass destruction proliferation. This report, published in the spring of this year, states that the Dutch have repeatedly prevented Iran and Russia from accessing Dutch technology. The report from Dutch intelligence, released in early April 2023, highlights the continuation of Iran's nuclear program in 2022 and the increase in its stockpiles of 20% and 60% enriched uranium, which 'can be further enriched to 90% uranium necessary for nuclear weapons using centrifuges.' It states: 'Iran is increasingly disregarding the agreements made under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and is enhancing its enrichment capacity by deploying more advanced centrifuges. This brings the prospect of Iran's first potential nuclear test closer.' Previously, the U.S. intelligence community reported in a document that Voice of America covered in early March 2023 that Iran's nuclear program is expanding, and Iran is utilizing conventional military forces, proxy forces, and partners, as well as military transactions, to advance its objectives. The U.S. intelligence community stated at that time that since the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a nuclear scientist in November 2020, Iran has accelerated its nuclear program and declared that it is no longer bound by any limitations under the JCPOA, conducting research and development activities in a way that brings the country closer to producing fissile material needed to complete a nuclear bomb—if it decides to build one. Media reports have repeatedly indicated that high-purity uranium production is ongoing in Iran, which is essential for producing and testing a nuclear bomb. The Islamic Republic claims it is not seeking to produce a nuclear bomb.
