Intense Battle Continues Between Russia and Ukraine on Russian Soil

Ukraine claims to be advancing deeper into Russian territory through drone attacks. The Russian government announced on Wednesday, August 24, that it had destroyed 117 Ukrainian drones over the past 24 hours in various regions, including Kursk, Voronezh, and Belgorod. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that his forces continue to advance in Kursk and have instructed their generals to take the next 'key step' on Russian soil. Zelensky's remarks come as Russian military commanders previously stated that the situation at the Kursk front has stabilized. According to the Associated Press, following Ukraine's surprise attack on Russia that began on August 16 in Kursk, Russian forces are still engaged in intense battles to counter the situation. Ukraine, after attacking Russian territory, asserts that Putin must accept peace. Since Russia's comprehensive invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago, which initiated conflict in large parts of four Ukrainian provinces, this is the first time Ukraine has managed to disrupt the equation and challenge Russia on its own soil. Additionally, Ukrainian television on Wednesday released images of Ukrainian soldiers taking down the Russian flag from a government building in the Kursk region, chanting patriotic slogans. Ukraine's attacks in this area continue while Russia has not ceased its drone strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities. The Ukrainian Air Force and local officials reported that over the past 24 hours, Ukraine shot down 17 out of 23 drones launched by Russia. They stated that several Russian drones hit energy facilities, causing temporary power outages in one region of Ukraine. U.S. President Joe Biden also commented on Wednesday that Ukraine's recent attacks have created a 'real dilemma' for Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that the U.S. had no involvement in these operations. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Kyiv's attacks in the Kursk region would delay peace negotiations for the long term. Rudion Miroshnik, the plenipotentiary ambassador and special envoy of this ministry, described Ukraine as 'delusional' and stated that peace talks with such a country are 'not very logical.' Miroshnik also criticized Ukraine's use of drones, claiming these attacks target civilians. However, the Prime Minister of Finland stated on Wednesday that Ukraine has the right to conduct military operations in the Kursk region of Russia, calling Ukraine's actions self-defense during a joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart. According to the Associated Press, Ukraine's operations in Kursk represent 'the largest attack on Russian soil since World War II,' and the image Russia has created of its invincibility over decades has been somewhat shattered by the new situation. However, the Ukrainian army has managed to respond to Russia's relentless efforts in recent months to weaken Ukraine's defensive capabilities at the front lines of the war in Eastern Ukraine. Initially, Russia downplayed Ukraine's incursion into its territory, claiming to have repelled or contained it, but the Russian President confirmed on Monday that the war's extension into his country has led to the flight of over a hundred thousand civilian residents from Kursk. The question arises whether the Ukrainian army used weapons recently received from NATO member countries for this operation. Several Western countries allied with Kyiv have refrained from stating that they authorized Ukraine's use of their military assistance in operations against Russia, concerned about escalating tensions in their relations with NATO and not wanting to push Russia into a war against NATO.
