Intense Verbal Clash Between Trump and Zelensky; Ukrainian President Leaves the White House

Reports indicate that an important meeting between the Presidents of the United States and Ukraine was left unfinished following a verbal altercation between them at the White House. Several media outlets have reported that the Ukrainian President left the White House early on Friday, March 1, without signing an agreement regarding the exploitation of Ukraine's mineral resources and holding a subsequent press conference. A White House official told Reuters that the signing of the agreement and the joint press conference could be rescheduled while Volodymyr Zelensky is in the U.S. During the meeting between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky before the formal negotiations began on Friday, Zelensky urged Trump to be cautious against Russia, while Trump accused his Ukrainian counterpart of 'disrespect.' The negotiations were supposed to focus on signing an agreement regarding the exploitation of Ukraine's mineral resources and discussing a peace agreement with Russia. In this meeting, Zelensky reacted to Trump's statements that Ukrainian cities have been completely destroyed as a result of three years of war, and the U.S. President emphasized that Putin is seeking an agreement. Trump told the Ukrainian President, 'You don't show any gratitude at all. This behavior is not interesting... It will be very hard to work with this situation.' The U.S. President further told Zelensky, 'You are gambling with the lives of millions and with World War III' and urged him to be 'grateful.' Trump added, 'What you are doing is very disrespectful to a country that has supported you more than others say.' Meanwhile, U.S.-Ukraine negotiations were supposed to focus on a framework agreement for U.S. access to Ukraine's mineral resources as a step towards ending the war with Russia. This was the first time the two leaders met in person since Trump took office last month, and they shook hands.
