International Condemnations of North Korea's Nuclear Test

North Korea's test of a "hydrogen bomb" on Sunday, September 3, has faced international reactions and condemnations. North Korea announced on Sunday that it had tested a hydrogen bomb capable of being mounted on intercontinental ballistic missiles. Hours before this announcement, seismic centers reported an earthquake in North Korea. Other countries have yet to confirm whether this nuclear explosion was of the hydrogen bomb type. In response to this nuclear test, China strongly condemned it and criticized Pyongyang for ignoring the wishes of the international community. China has political and trade relations with North Korea and is considered its most important supporter. According to AFP, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that North Korea "ignored the widespread opposition of the international community and conducted another nuclear test. The Chinese government strongly opposes this action and condemns it firmly." South Korean President Moon Jae-in also stated that Seoul would work to further isolate North Korea. According to Reuters, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Sunday that North Korea's nuclear test is unacceptable and poses a serious threat to his country. In this context, Japan has mentioned the possibility of imposing further sanctions, potentially including fuel sanctions against North Korea. North Korea's sixth nuclear test has surpassed the destructive power of the two bombs dropped by the United States on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki for the first time. Meanwhile, Japan announced that General McMaster, the White House National Security Advisor, assured Tokyo in a conversation with his Japanese counterpart that Washington is committed to defending Japan. Under a treaty signed between Japan and the United States after World War II, Washington is committed to defending this country. Under this treaty, Japan is under the nuclear umbrella of the United States, and an attack on Japan by other countries could face a nuclear response from the U.S. Additionally, in response to North Korea's nuclear test, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the action and called for restraint from all parties and prevention of escalating tensions. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated in its announcement: "The latest blatant disregard by Pyongyang for UN Security Council resolutions and international law norms deserves the strongest condemnation." Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, which has a permanent seat on the Security Council, also called for an immediate response from the UN Security Council to North Korea. On the other hand, the International Atomic Energy Agency, affiliated with the United Nations, expressed regret over North Korea's latest nuclear test in a statement, noting that Pyongyang's action violates the repeated demands of the international community to refrain from missile tests. In this context, North Korea claims to have successfully tested a "hydrogen bomb."
