International Reactions Intensify to Iran's Crackdown; From Condemnations to Evacuation Warnings

As the nationwide uprising in Iran continues and concerns grow over the humanitarian crisis, several governments and senior international officials have adopted new positions indicating the expanding dimensions of the crisis and increasing external pressure on the Islamic Republic. The Prime Minister of Britain condemned the crackdown and killing of protesters in Iran. Keir Starmer, speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, January 24, emphasized that the gap between the 'courage of the Iranian people' and the 'violence and brutality of a desperate regime' has never been so clear. He noted the 'naked and brutal behavior of the Iranian government' and announced that London, along with its allies, is considering further sanctions against the Islamic Republic while also committing 'all its resources to protect British citizens.' In another development, Reuters reported, citing three diplomats, that some personnel at the U.S. military base in Qatar have been advised to leave the base. According to this report, several forces were told to leave Al Udeid Air Base by the evening of Wednesday, January 24. Reuters did not identify these diplomats and added that the U.S. Embassy in Doha has not commented on this matter so far. Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Tehran issued a statement on Wednesday urging Indian citizens to leave Iran as soon as possible. This warning, which includes students, pilgrims, traders, and tourists, asks Indian nationals to 'leave Iranian soil at the earliest opportunity and through available routes, including commercial flights.' On the other hand, France has raised the possibility of taking practical steps to circumvent the internet blackout in Iran. The country's Foreign Minister announced on Wednesday that Paris is considering sending Eutelsat satellite terminals to Iran to enable internet services following widespread communication disruptions by the Iranian authorities. Jean-Noël Barrot, in response to a question from a member of the French Parliament, said, 'We are considering all options, and the option you mentioned is among them.'
