Introduction of 'Enemy' to the Oscars; Iranian-Swedish Director: I Proved That Life is a Realm of Possibilities

Sweden has nominated the film 'Enemy' by Iranian-Swedish writer and director Milad Alami as its representative for the Academy Awards. This drama, featuring prominent Iranian actor Peyman Maadi, will compete in the Best International Feature Film category. Milad Alami expressed his happiness to Voice of America upon hearing the news of his film's selection as Sweden's representative at the Oscars. He added, 'We knew that Enemy was one of the three films that made it to Sweden's final list and was being reviewed by the selection committee for Oscar nomination. When we were informed that Enemy was chosen, it was unbelievable and exciting; I am truly happy for all the amazing members of the team.' Alami mentioned that as a teenager watching the Oscars on television, he never thought such success would be possible, but he has now proven that anything in life is achievable. This Iranian-Swedish filmmaker stated that the selection of 'Enemy' as Sweden's representative for the Oscars has received positive reactions from critics and art lovers. He further noted that he has received many positive messages, and the selection of a film by an Iranian-Swedish director for the Oscars has garnered significant media attention. Milad Alami fled Iran with his family at the age of six and immigrated to Sweden. He drew inspiration for this film from his personal experiences in Sweden as an Iranian immigrant. According to him, it is an interesting phenomenon that a film about an Iranian character, made by an Iranian-Swedish director, is going to the Oscars as Sweden's representative. Alami describes 'Enemy' as a film about freedom, focusing on an individual who grows up in a dictatorial country like Iran and migrates to a free country like Sweden. In this work, we show what this freedom feels like and whether one can utilize it. 'Enemy' tells the story of Iman, an Iranian wrestler played by Peyman Maadi, who seeks asylum in Sweden with his wife and two daughters. To expedite the process of his asylum application, he decides to wrestle again and aims to be selected for the Swedish national team. 'Enemy' focuses on the theme of immigration and depicts some of the challenges faced by refugees in Scandinavian countries. The film also addresses personal and family challenges, emotional duality, and the confusion of this wrestler regarding issues such as homosexuality, which is one of the main mysteries of the story and the reason for his departure from Iran. The preliminary list of 15 films in the international section will be announced on December 21, and the final list of five films will be revealed on January 23.
