Investigation Continues into Vehicle Collision with People in Münster, Germany

Investigations in Germany are ongoing regarding the incident where a van struck people at a café in the city of Münster. In this incident, two citizens were killed and 20 others were injured, with the condition of six being reported as critical. On the afternoon of Saturday, April 6, a van collided with people sitting outdoors at a café in Münster during spring weather. The German police stated that the driver committed suicide inside the vehicle by shooting himself. The German news agency identified the deceased as a 51-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man. According to the Associated Press, witnesses at the scene reported that people were fleeing the town square, where the vehicle struck them. Security forces immediately cordoned off the surrounding areas, and investigations into the incident and the driver of the van are ongoing. Herbert Reul, the Minister of the Interior for North Rhine-Westphalia, told reporters that the van driver was a German citizen. Mr. Reul emphasized that the investigation is in its preliminary stages and 'there is currently no evidence linking the incident to Islamic extremism.' Although government officials have not yet disclosed the driver's identity, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung identified him as 'Jens Er.' who lived two kilometers from the incident site. The German news agency quoted the state prosecutor's office stating that the driver was a 48-year-old resident of Münster. The ZDF network reported that security forces searched the driver's home and found he had connections with 'right-wing extremists,' but no evidence has emerged that he was a member of an extremist right-wing group. During the search of the van, police found fireworks in addition to the weapon the driver used to commit suicide.
