Iran Advances to Quarterfinals After Hard-Fought Victory Against Syria

The Iranian national football team faced the Syrian national team on Wednesday, February 10, at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium in the Round of 16 of the AFC Asian Cup. After a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time, Iran triumphed 5-3 in a penalty shootout. The Iranian lineup included Alireza Beiranvand, Ehsan Hajisafi, Shoja Khalilzadeh, Roozbeh Cheshmi, Ramin Rezaeian, Saman Ghoddos, Saeed Ezatolahi, Mehdi Qaidy, Mehdi Taremi, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, and Sardar Azmoun. This victory marked the first time in 28 years that Iran won in extra time in the Asian Cup. Historically, Iran has faced Syria 17 times, winning 17, drawing 14, and losing only once, which occurred during the 1974 World Cup qualifiers. Additionally, Iran was fined $3,000 by the Asian Football Confederation for the presence of organized supporters during the match against the UAE. Following this victory, Iran will face Japan in the quarterfinals, who advanced by defeating Bahrain 3-1.
