Iran: Agreement Reached with Atomic Agency to Resolve Remaining Issues

The spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization stated that during the recent visit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) delegation to Tehran, a "fundamental understanding regarding the agenda of topics and the timeline for joint cooperation has been achieved, marking an important step towards resolving outstanding issues." According to the official news agency of the Islamic Republic, IRNA, Behrouz Kamalvandi mentioned on the night of Tuesday, July 15, that the visit of the IAEA delegation, following the recent trip of its Director General, "demonstrates the serious determination of both parties to effectively enhance cooperation." The five-member IAEA delegation arrived in Tehran on Tuesday morning and left the Iranian capital early Wednesday. Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the IAEA, had stated during his visit to Iran on July 12 that both sides had reached a better understanding. He announced the day after that the agency's report regarding the potential military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program might be ready by the end of this year. The spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization now says that the "understanding" reached between Tehran and the IAEA will facilitate "technical interaction" between the two parties. The IAEA has not yet issued a formal statement or announcement regarding its delegation's visit to Tehran. This visit comes amid ongoing nuclear negotiations between Tehran and six global powers, as it appears that the parties have once again missed the set deadline, and discussions are expected to continue in the coming days. The IAEA, as a monitoring body, has a significant responsibility in verifying the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program. At the same time, this organization has long been trying to hold Tehran accountable for its past nuclear activities, which are feared to have pursued military objectives. Iranian officials have consistently emphasized that Tehran's nuclear program is peaceful and that there is no intention to develop nuclear weapons. Abbas Araqchi, a senior member of the Iranian negotiating team in Vienna, had previously expressed hope for progress between Tehran and the IAEA regarding the resolution of the military dimensions issue. In this context, the Deputy Directors General of the IAEA are set to travel to Tehran tonight. A Western official stated that Iran wants sanctions on its missile program to be lifted. The White House indicated that negotiations with Iran might extend beyond Tuesday. Potential outcomes of reaching or failing to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran include changing the dynamics of proxy wars, the ongoing conflict against the people in the streets of Iran, and the responsibilities of opposition groups amid the possibility of radicalizing Iranian society.
