Iran Allows Women to Attend Kish Beach Volleyball Competitions After Threat from FIVB

Iranian media reports that women have been allowed to watch the Kish Beach Volleyball World Tour from the stands. This development follows a warning from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to the event organizers. On Wednesday, February 15, reports emerged indicating that Iranian women were barred from entering the competition venue, prompting a strong reaction from the FIVB, which threatened to suspend the event. The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reported on the same day statements from Kasra Ghafouri, head of the Iranian Beach Volleyball Organization, who deemed the prohibition of women's attendance as 'irresponsible' behavior. According to Mr. Ghafouri, a meeting was held with law enforcement officials and FIVB representatives to resolve the issue. Shortly thereafter, ISNA reported that women were permitted to attend the Kish Beach Volleyball World Tour. From previous comments by the head of the Iranian Beach Volleyball Organization, it appears that seating for women and men at the competition venue has been segregated. He stated, 'Considering that we are an Islamic country and all regulations must be observed, we have designated areas for female spectators at the competition venue. If women adhere to Islamic decorum, there will be no issue with their attendance.' The presence of women as spectators at volleyball games in Iran has long been a serious challenge for civil activists and the women's community in Iran. While the Iranian government has repeatedly barred women from entering competition venues, women's rights activists consider watching sports competitions in stadiums as part of their rights. Meanwhile, human rights groups have repeatedly urged the FIVB to prevent international competitions from being held in Iran if women are barred from attending.
