Iran Claims Cooperation with UN Nuclear Inspectors

Iran states that it is cooperating with United Nations nuclear inspectors and that the international community should recognize Iran's right to produce nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Hamid Reza Asefi, the spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry, reiterated the government's position that Iran is willing to consider a new agreement that would allow for more immediate inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Iran. However, the spokesperson accused the international community of failing to grant Iran access to nuclear technology, which it claims to have the right to as a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. These remarks came after the IAEA reported finding traces of highly enriched uranium at one of Iran's nuclear facilities, raising serious concerns about Iran's nuclear program. Iran is under increasing international pressure to sign an additional protocol related to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and to allow unannounced inspections of its nuclear facilities.
