Iran Condemned by the G7; US Seeks to Cut Moscow-Tehran 'Alliance'

Foreign ministers of the seven industrialized nations united in the so-called G7 condemned Iran's military assistance to Russia and its 'destabilizing actions' regarding its nuclear program and Tehran's support for militia groups in the region. At the same time, Donald Trump's special representative for Russia and Ukraine stated that the US will seek to sever the alliance between Russia and Iran. The foreign ministers of the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, along with a senior EU representative, met on Saturday, February 16, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany. The G7's final statement, chaired by Canada, indicated that members reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate to help achieve lasting peace in the 'devastating war of Russia in Ukraine' and emphasized the need for strong security guarantees to ensure the war does not restart. The G7 members condemned military assistance from Iran and North Korea to Russia, as well as China's dual-use assistance to Moscow that could be used for military purposes. The G7 statement explicitly condemned Iran's destabilizing actions, including the accelerated enrichment of uranium without valid justification and Iran's facilitative support to 'terrorist organizations and armed groups across the Middle East and the Red Sea.' The statement also denounced Iran's ballistic missile and drone expansion program. The G7 foreign ministers and the EU's high representative condemned the 'widespread repression and violation of basic human rights' by the Iranian government. The Islamic Republic of Iran is the only government mentioned in the G7 statement regarding internal matters related to the repression and violation of its people's human rights. On Saturday, the foreign ministers also warned their Ukrainian counterpart that if Russia does not negotiate in good faith to end the war in Ukraine, it will face higher costs such as increased prices and effective sanctions on oil and gas. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been repeatedly condemned by the West for its military cooperation with Moscow, including providing thousands of drones to the Russian army, which have been used in Russia's three-year war in Ukraine, and has been the target of extensive European sanctions and those from the previous US administration. However, this is the first time the G7 statement has condemned Iran since Donald Trump's administration took office. Last week, Trump emphasized his efforts to end the war in Ukraine and prevent the deaths of young people on both sides following a 90-minute phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reuters reported a significant surge in unsold oil reserves in Iran and Russia. Trump has sent his national security advisor and a senior team of trusted officials to Munich and then Saudi Arabia to pursue negotiations and contacts aimed at facilitating an end to the war in Ukraine. General Keith Klage, Trump's special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, stated at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday that severing Russia's alliance with countries like Iran is one of the strategies the Trump administration is considering to increase pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine. General Klage said the United States will attempt to cut Russia's alliance with North Korea, Iran, and China. He noted that such alliances did not exist during Trump's first term. According to General Klage, intensifying sanctions against Russia, 'similar to what has been done regarding Iran,' could 'break the economic backbone' of Russia. General Klage met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday alongside the US Vice President and Secretary of State at the Munich Security Conference. The Islamic Republic of Iran has denied equipping Russia with drones and also rejected reports about potentially providing missiles to the Russian army, claiming it supports diplomacy for the war in Ukraine. The US and its European allies have confirmed Kyiv's reports that Iranian drones, including the 'Shahed 136,' have been used in hundreds of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure such as energy in Ukraine. The closer ties between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Russia, including Iran's efforts to purchase advanced Russian fighter jets and senior Iranian officials' visits to Moscow, have increased while the Biden administration had minimal contact with Moscow. Biden has not spoken with Putin since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and has emphasized extensive military aid to Ukraine from Kyiv. However, Trump has somewhat turned the tide in his first four weeks by engaging in dialogue with Putin and working to end the war in Ukraine. It is unclear what concessions Russia might request in exchange for the US's demand to sever its ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran, which senior US officials refer to as an 'alliance.'
