Iran Denies Involvement in Downing Israeli Fighter Jet

On Saturday, February 10, the Iranian Foreign Ministry officially denied reports from Syria claiming Iran's involvement in the downing of an Israeli fighter jet and rejected the notion of military presence in Syrian territory. Just hours before Israeli and Syrian media reported continued Israeli airstrikes against Syria on Saturday morning, Israel announced the downing of an 'Iranian drone' in Israeli airspace and simultaneously reported the crash of one of its own fighter jets on Israeli soil due to Syrian air defense fire. Following these events, Agence France-Presse quoted an Israeli army spokesperson on Saturday warning that the Islamic Republic and Syria are 'playing with fire.' Jonathan Conricus, the spokesperson, also noted that Israel does not seek to worsen the situation and is avoiding escalation. This official described the 'entry of the Iranian drone' into Israeli airspace via Syrian territory as 'the most severe and blatant violation of Israel's territorial integrity' by Iran in recent years. In response to this accusation, the Iranian government's information website tweeted on Saturday that these reports are false and that the 'flight of the Iranian drone and Iran's involvement in the downing of the Zionist aggressor's fighter jet' is a 'ridiculous' claim. The tweet quoted Bahram Qasemi, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, stating: 'The claim of the flight of an Iranian drone and Iran's involvement in the downing of the Zionist aggressor's fighter jet is too ridiculous to address, as the Islamic Republic of Iran has an advisory presence in Syria at the request of that country's legitimate and legal government.' Throughout the seven years since the start of the Syrian civil war, the Islamic Republic has consistently described its forces' presence in Syria and other countries, including Yemen, as 'advisory' rather than military or combat-related. Meanwhile, over the past year, there have been numerous reports of Iranian military personnel being killed in Syrian territory, and until just three months ago, there was hardly a week without news of these personnel's funerals in various Iranian cities. Conversely, Israel claims that Iran aims to increase its military influence and the presence of its allied militias in Syria even after the end of the civil war. Before the Iranian government's official response to the news from Syria, Hossein Salami, the deputy commander of the IRGC, refrained from confirming the report of the downed Iranian drone on Saturday. Salami also threatened: 'Today, from this point, we can destroy all American bases in the region and create hell for the Zionists [Israel].' Meanwhile, a news website known as 'Al-Kawthar' in Iran published a statement attributed to the 'Command of the Syrian Allies Operations Room,' which stated: 'The enemy's [Israel's] claim that the drone entered the occupied Palestinian airspace is false.' The official German news agency reported that the command of this 'operations room' was under Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the IRGC's Quds Force. Over the past two years, multiple attacks have occurred in Syria, all attributed to Israel, with the most recent one taking place last week, just hours after the Israeli Prime Minister visited near the Syrian border. However, the airstrikes on Saturday intensified following the events early that morning. Israel reported that its Apache model attack helicopters destroyed an 'Iranian drone' that had 'penetrated' into Israeli airspace from Syrian skies.
