Iran: Final Nuclear Agreement Will Have a Specific Time Frame

Abbas Araghchi, in response to statements by the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, who said, "The agreement we are negotiating has no time limits," stated that "none of the provisions anticipated in the agreement will be permanent." According to IRNA news agency, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister said on Tuesday, June 9, that "if a final agreement is reached, it will have a specific time frame, and none of the provisions anticipated in it will be permanent." Antony Blinken, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, had said on June 8 in Washington, "(if a final agreement is reached) most of Iran's sanctions will be suspended for a long time, not ended, and if Iran fails to meet its commitments, they will automatically be reactivated." He added, "We will not agree to any deal unless the International Atomic Energy Agency has conducted all its inspections of any sites in Iran and declares that Iran's nuclear program is peaceful." Abbas Araghchi also stated, "Of course, the commitments that Iran has accepted under international treaties such as the NPT will continue as long as Iran's accession to these treaties continues." He added, "The U.S. side's reliance on such commitments, which are made for domestic purposes or to satisfy allies, is merely a worthless fallacy." Antony Blinken regarding a potential agreement said: "It should be noted that the agreement we are negotiating does not have an expiration date. It is not the case that there is a sunset and one day it will end. Different parts of this agreement have different time frames." Meanwhile, the National Security Commission of the Iranian Parliament has prepared a plan that states any nuclear agreement must be accompanied by "three conditions." According to IRNA, this plan states: "Any results of nuclear negotiations with the 1+5 countries are valid only if three requirements are clearly met and approved by the Islamic Consultative Assembly." These three conditions are: "Complete and comprehensive lifting of all sanctions imposed by Security Council resolutions, EU regulations, the U.S. Congress, and the government on the day of the agreement." The second and third conditions state: "The International Atomic Energy Agency is allowed to conduct routine inspections of nuclear sites, and access to all documents of scientists and military, security, and sensitive non-nuclear sites is prohibited under any pretext." And thirdly: "No restrictions on acquiring peaceful nuclear knowledge and technology and the supply chain and production in research and development are accepted." This report indicates that this plan has been agreed upon in the National Security Commission and must be submitted to the parliamentary board for any further action. Negotiations between Iran and the 1+5 countries for reaching a final agreement are ongoing.
