Iran Human Rights Organization Warns of Imminent Execution of Jamshid Sharmad

The Iran Human Rights Organization has issued a warning about the imminent execution of Jamshid Sharmad, a 67-year-old political prisoner, calling for immediate action from the international community to prevent the execution. The director of this human rights organization, Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, stated that 'raising the political cost through a decisive reaction from the international community, especially the European Union, is the only way to prevent the execution' of this Iranian-German dual citizen. Previously, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock emphasized the unfairness of the judicial process against Jamshid Sharmad and called for the immediate cancellation of his death sentence. Mr. Sharmad, who was kidnapped by intelligence agents from the United Arab Emirates in the summer of 2020 and transferred to Iran, has been sentenced to death on charges of 'corruption on earth.' Amnesty International has also labeled Jamshid Sharmad's conviction as 'unjust' in a letter to Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the head of the judiciary, and called for his release. This human rights organization reported that this political prisoner has been tortured over the past three years and has been held in solitary confinement for an extended period. Ghazaleh Sharmad, the child of this political prisoner, stated in an interview with Voice of America that contacting her father has become impossible. The judicial process regarding this political opponent has faced objections from legal experts from the very beginning. The Islamic Republic has referred to Jamshid Sharmad as the 'head of the Tondar group' and accused him of planning terrorist activities in Iran. Mr. Sharmad's family has denied these allegations.
