Iran Publicly Displays S-300 Missile Defense System for the First Time

For the first time since equipping Iran's military forces with the S-300 missile defense system, a unit of this Russian-made system was publicly displayed in central Tehran. This action took place as part of a military equipment exhibition held to commemorate the anniversary of the start of the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, set up in Baharestan Square near the Islamic Consultative Assembly building. Tasnim News Agency published images from this military equipment exhibition, which showcased not only the S-300 missile defense system but also the Sajil and Qadr ballistic missiles, along with several other air defense and missile systems. Concurrently with this military equipment exhibition, the Islamic Republic Army unveiled 'new achievements of the Ground Forces.' This ceremony, held on Sunday at the Shahid Fallahi Training and Support Center, included the unveiling of several tanks, armored vehicles, and air defense systems. Although both events were organized during 'Sacred Defense Week' marking the 37th anniversary of the start of the Iran-Iraq war, they coincided with the first two days of two military exercises conducted by Iranian forces in the western regions of the country: a security exercise by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) known as Muharram and a rapid reaction unit exercise by the Army's Ground Forces. The holding of a military equipment exhibition in the heart of Tehran, primarily featuring missile and anti-missile systems, comes at a time when the military actions of the IRGC, particularly in the area of ballistic missile tests, have faced significant criticism from the United States and its allies. The U.S. views these actions by the IRGC, along with its presence in countries such as Iraq and Syria, as part of Iran's 'destabilizing and destructive behaviors,' which contradict the spirit of the nuclear agreement emphasizing Iran's participation in global peace and security. In this context, the Trump administration, which has emphasized its determination to counter missile threats from Iran and North Korea, has repeatedly added individuals and entities involved in the Islamic Republic's missile programs to its sanctions list. After the IRGC tested a long-range ballistic missile known as Khorramshahr on Saturday, claiming it could reach Israel, Donald Trump emphasized that this missile test and Iran's cooperation with North Korea indicate that there is little agreement between Iran and the U.S. The long-range missile test also elicited reactions in Israel, where the Israeli Defense Minister condemned it as provocative, and on Sunday, a security cabinet meeting was convened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss it. The Russian S-300 system, a missile defense system, is being publicly displayed in Iran for the first time, and its delivery to Iran had been delayed for years due to extensive sanctions against the Islamic Republic. However, after Iran and six world powers, including Russia, reached an agreement on Iran's nuclear program, the path for the delivery of this missile defense system to Iran was cleared. Earlier, in mid-March of last year, Iranian media reported, without specifying the exact timing, that this air defense system had been tested in central Iran's desert and had 'intercepted and destroyed various targets, including ballistic missiles and drones.'
