Iran Secures Third Place in World Futsal Championship

The Iranian national futsal team achieved third place in the 2016 World Cup by defeating Portugal in a penalty shootout. With this result and the bronze medal, Iran recorded its best performance in the history of this tournament, marking a historic achievement for this sport in Iran. The Iranian players had previously lost to Russia in the semifinals despite a competitive display. Portugal, having lost to Argentina, entered the third-place match. Iran, missing their captain due to injury, ended the first half in a goalless draw despite several good opportunities. In the first minute of the second half, Portugal managed to score twice, putting them on the brink of claiming third place and the bronze medal. However, Iran made a comeback and finished regular time with a 2-2 draw. The team, coached by Nazem al-Sharia, triumphed in the penalty shootout with a score of 4-3, securing third place in the 2016 World Cup. The match took place at the Coliseo el Pueblo in Cali, attended by FIFA President Infantino.
