Iran Warns American Cruiser

Iranian military officials announced that an American cruiser, which had approached the waters where the Iranian Navy was conducting exercises, left the area following a warning from this military force. On Wednesday, February 7, the Fars News Agency reported statements from Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari, commander of the Iranian Navy, indicating that this American cruiser had approached the exercise area with the aim of 'gaining information on Iran's military tactics.' According to him, a maritime patrol aircraft and the Alborz destroyer issued warnings to the American cruiser, which eventually left the region. Sayyari emphasized that 'it seems that some still find it hard to believe in Iran's naval power, and therefore they try to closely observe our actions and capabilities.' The Iranian military had previously announced that on Wednesday, they would conduct an exercise named 'Velayat 94' over an area of three million square kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz to the northern Indian Ocean, during which 'all tactics and combat plans of the Navy will be tested and evaluated.' The commander of the Iranian Navy also stressed that since munitions and equipment such as missiles and torpedoes were to be used in this exercise, foreign vessels, whether commercial or military, had been warned to stay away to avoid harm. Meanwhile, CNN reported a reaction from a U.S. military official regarding the incident, describing the entire matter as a routine issue. Kevin Stephens, a U.S. Navy commander, stated, 'Iran has announced the location of its exercises and the areas that are at risk of fire. This is a common practice that all navies follow when they want to conduct military training at sea.' He then stated that U.S. forces also announce the areas of their military exercises but never consider this action as a 'command.' About two weeks ago, Iran detained sailors from two American boats that had entered Iranian waters, but following communications between the foreign ministers of the two countries, all sailors were released after a few hours. Both the U.S. and Iran acknowledged that the American boats had mistakenly entered Iranian waters. However, the action of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Navy in detaining the American sailors was praised by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic.
