Iran Wins World Championship in Freestyle Wrestling

The Iranian national freestyle wrestling team defeated the US national team, the host of the competitions, with a score of 5 to 3, thus becoming the champion of the World Championship for the fourth consecutive year. The final match took place in Los Angeles, starting at 5 AM on April 13, 2023, Tehran time. In this 43rd edition of the tournament, the Iranian team, coached by Rasoul Khadem, traveled to the United States. After victories against Belarus and Turkey, the Iranian wrestlers faced the team from Azerbaijan and also defeated them with a score of 7 to 1. Against the US team, Hassan Rahimi won at 57 kg, Behnam Ehsanpour at 61 kg, Hassan Yazdani at 70 kg, Meysam Mustafa Jokar at 86 kg, and Kamal Qasemi at 125 kg, securing victories against their American opponents. In the ranking matches, the Azerbaijan team also achieved third place by defeating the Russian team. The Twitter account of the World Wrestling Federation stated: 'With loud support in Los Angeles, the Iranian team overcame the host.' The United States, which proposed the World Championship in freestyle wrestling at the beginning of the 1970s, has hosted the most editions of the tournament. Over the years since the beginning of this championship, the former Soviet Union, current Russia, the United States, and Iran have recorded the most championship titles.
