Iranian-American Ramin Tolu'i Appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Finance at U.S. Treasury

The U.S. Senate has approved the appointment of Ramin Tolu'i, an Iranian-American, as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Finance at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The Treasury Department's website reported on Thursday, November 21, that Tolu'i will be responsible for international financial policy, coordination with G20 countries, and bilateral and domestic economic issues. Jacob J. Lew, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, stated, 'Ramin Tolu'i's experience in international affairs, in the private sector, and at the Treasury will be vital to the government's efforts to strengthen the U.S. economic recovery through managing international economic issues.' He added, 'In an era of complex global challenges, Ramin (Tolu'i) will play a key role in boosting growth, creating jobs, and balancing relations between American workers and capital owners.' Before joining the U.S. Treasury, Tolu'i was an international executive at PIMCO, an international investment management firm, where he was responsible for emerging markets and became head of the Asia-Pacific region in 2012. He began working with PIMCO in 2006 as a manager for emerging markets and took on the responsibility for the firm's international equities in 2009. The Treasury Department's statement also noted that Tolu'i has held various positions within the department. He served as the director of the Western Hemisphere from 2003 to 2006 and as a senior advisor to the Deputy Secretary of the Treasury for international affairs from 2001 to 2003. Tolu'i also worked as the deputy director and international economist in the Central and Southeastern Europe section of the Treasury from 1999 to 2001. This Iranian-American holds a master's degree from Harvard University and a PhD from Balliol College, Oxford University.
