Iranian Drone Approaches American Fighter Jet to '30 Meters' in Persian Gulf

An American official announced on Tuesday, August 8, that an Iranian drone approached within 30 meters of an American fighter jet landing on its aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, describing the action as 'dangerous and unprofessional.' According to Reuters, the unnamed U.S. official added that the American fighter jet had to maneuver to avoid a collision with the 'Qom-1' drone, which did not respond to radio communications. This incident marks the third military confrontation between Iran and the U.S. in the Persian Gulf in the past three weeks. Ten days ago, the IRGC Navy announced that a confrontation occurred between one of its vessels and U.S. warships on July 27, during which flares and two warning shots were fired by the American ships. The IRGC's statement noted that the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its accompanying cruiser were monitored by the IRGC's Zulfiqar missile-launching corvettes while approaching IRGC vessels in the Rasalat oil and gas area. Three days prior, U.S. defense officials reported that an Iranian patrol vessel came within approximately 140 meters of the USS Thunderbolt during U.S. and allied naval exercises in the Persian Gulf. Last June, a U.S. Navy commander reported that an Iranian boat had 'dangerously and unprofessionally' directed a laser at a U.S. Navy helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz. In May, the U.S. Navy reported a 'tense' confrontation between one of its destroyers and an IRGC vessel in the Persian Gulf, stating that the American destroyer fired warning flares at the IRGC boat. U.S. officials have previously described the actions of IRGC vessels approaching their ships as 'unprofessional' and 'dangerous,' with White House officials warning of the 'risk of miscalculation' arising from these confrontations. The recent encounter follows President Donald Trump's signing of new sanctions approved by Congress against Iran, Russia, and North Korea on August 2, which paves the way for further sanctions against the IRGC. Congressional Republicans accuse the IRGC of supporting terrorist activities and destabilizing the security of the Middle East, claims that Iranian officials have denied.
