Iranian Heroin Trafficker Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison in the U.S.

An Iranian trafficker has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for attempting to import and distribute heroin in the United States. According to a statement released by Damian Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Malek Balouchzahi, known as 'Malek Khan,' who is a citizen of Iran, began contacting individuals he believed were heroin traffickers interested in importing large quantities of heroin to the U.S. and distributing methamphetamine in Australia in September 2019. However, these individuals were actually working for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and one undercover agent introduced himself to Balouchzahi and his associate as a heroin distributor based in New York. According to this statement, Balouchzahi delivered two kilograms of heroin as a sample to Mozambique in December 2019 to be tested and sold in the U.S. He intended to supply larger quantities of heroin for import and distribution within the U.S. following this shipment. In October 2021, during meetings in Nairobi, Kenya, he agreed to procure a large volume of heroin for import to New York and to use maritime routes, employing a fishing company to conceal his trafficking activities. During these meetings in Nairobi, Balouchzahi also described his previous activities in international drug trafficking over the past decade, including the transport of thousands of kilograms of heroin, and showed photographs that depicted his extensive smuggling operations. In addition to imprisonment, Balouchzahi has been sentenced to five years of supervised release. Damian Williams stated that Balouchzahi was active in the trafficking of toxic substances and that his trafficking operations had spread large quantities of lethal drugs worldwide for at least a decade. He added that when Balouchzahi sought to expand his operations in the U.S., American law enforcement quickly put an end to his dangerous trade.
