Iran's First Defeat in Asian Volleyball Championship

In the second round of the Asian Volleyball Championship, South Korea secured the top position in Group E by defeating Iran 3-1. Despite leading in the first game, Iran lost three consecutive sets to their opponent. Hong Seong from South Korea was named the top scorer of the match with 17 points. Consequently, the Iranian team, led by Peyman Akbari, finished second in Group E in the second round with six points. This was Iran's first defeat in this competition. Iran has previously won the championship in the last two editions and is aiming for a third consecutive title while hosting the event without ticket sales for spectators. Slobodan Kovac rested the star players and provided a roster of both young and experienced players to Peyman Akbari. The Iranian players in this competition include Hamzeh Zareini, Pourya Fayyazi, Mostafa Sharifat, Farhad Salafzoun, Ali Hossein (libero), Masoud Gholami, Mojtaba Gholizadeh, Rahman Davoodi, Ali Shafiei, Reza Safaei, Farhad Pirouztour, and Mohammad Tahr Vadi. Mr. Akbari took charge of this team while also coaching several other teams: the national student volleyball team, the B team, the under-23 national team, and the Paykan club. Before the competition, this team faced the under-23 team in a friendly match, both coached by Peyman Akbari. After the defeat against South Korea, he told reporters: 'We made mistakes in the second, third, and fourth sets and lost. Today, the Koreans had good reception, and they were better in the first attack, which is why we lost. I'm not happy about the loss, but losing at this stage is better than losing in the knockout stage.' The head coach of the Iranian national volleyball team continued: 'It was a good experience, and we learned that we should not underestimate the opponent and must fight until the last moment. I am sure our condition will be better against Australia. I didn't want to talk about the refereeing; the Koreans created psychological warfare, and our players lost focus. The line judges also made some mistakes, but overall, we didn't lose because of the refereeing.' In one of the most important matches on Tuesday, the Chinese team managed to defeat Qatar 3-2. Thailand lost to Taipei in three consecutive games. Australia also overcame Japan 3-1 to become Iran's opponent in the quarter-finals. After defeating Iran, South Korea faced Japan to determine who would advance to the semi-finals. The Koreans remain undefeated, while Japan has suffered two losses against China and Qatar so far. The surprising team of Qatar, coached by Juan Cichero, will face Taiwan. Cichero was an assistant during Velasco's tenure in Iran. China, which has not been champion since 1999, will face Thailand. The Chinese last won their championship in Tehran.
