Iran's Judiciary Announces Release of Imprisoned Austrian Citizen

The official organ of Iran's judiciary reported the release of an Austrian national from prison, identified as "Christian Weber," utilizing "leniency and Islamic mercy" provisions. The news agency Mizan published this information on Tuesday, September 17, citing Nasser Atabati, the head of the judiciary in West Azerbaijan province. Although the duration of Weber's imprisonment in Iran was not mentioned, Austrian media reported that he was released after two years of incarceration. The report stated that this Austrian citizen, who was imprisoned for crimes committed in West Azerbaijan province, was freed through leniency and Islamic mercy. The Mizan report did not specify the nature of the crimes allegedly committed by the Austrian citizen in Iran. However, in 2022, Austria announced that one of its citizens had been detained in Iran in connection with unrelated allegations following the protests after the death of Mahsa Jina Amini. Reuters also reported that attempts to contact the Austrian embassy for inquiries about Weber's "committed crimes" in Iran were unsuccessful. The head of the judiciary in West Azerbaijan province announced the handover of Christian Weber to Wolf Dietrich Heim, the Austrian ambassador to Iran, to facilitate his exit and transfer out of the country. An image of this young Austrian citizen was not published by Mizan and is only available in some Austrian publications. Austria confirmed the release of Masoud Mosahab, a dual-national prisoner, from the Islamic Republic's prison. However, some Austrian publications referred to Christian Weber as a "political prisoner" and a "hostage" who had been abducted in Iran. On the Austrian Parliament's website, a question regarding his status in Iran, posed to representatives of this country in the European Parliament, is still accessible. Martin Graf, a member of parliament, had asked Alexander Schallenberg, the then Austrian foreign minister, about this matter, stating that Mr. Weber had been "abducted" and transferred to prison upon his arrival in Urmia on August 25, 2022, at the age of 27. According to Mr. Graf, information from the Somali intelligence agency regarding Christian Weber was later found to be incorrect, and the charges against him were subsequently changed to "carrying dangerous weapons." In December 2022, Masoud Mosahab, a 76-year-old businessman and secretary-general of the "Iran-Austria Friendship Association," who was arrested during a trip to Tehran in February 2019 and sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of "spying for Germany and Israel," was also released from prison. The Iranian government has been detaining foreign or dual-national prisoners for years, accusing them of various charges, including espionage, and releasing them after receiving concessions.
