Iran's Prison Organization Opposes Medical Leave for Nasrin Javadi

Jafar Azimzadeh, the head of the board of the Free Union of Workers of Iran, reported that officials from the Islamic Republic's Prison Organization have opposed the medical leave of Nasrin Javadi, a member of this labor organization. According to Mr. Azimzadeh, 'After 600 days of this retired worker's imprisonment, her medical leave was once again denied.' Previously, the Free Union of Workers of Iran had reported on the deteriorating health condition of 67-year-old Nasrin Javadi in Evin Prison, stating that due to lack of access to treatment and harsh prison conditions, she is in poor condition. The report indicates that Ms. Javadi's hearing has severely deteriorated, and the lengthy process of transferring her from prison to medical facilities has caused serious neurological issues for her. Additionally, Nasrin Javadi's white blood cell count is very low, severely weakening her immune system. The Free Union of Workers of Iran also reported a worsening of Ms. Javadi's osteoporosis due to her body's inability to absorb calcium and the inadequate nutrition in prison, and noted that she suffers from a herniated disc, which has also worsened due to neglect of her condition in prison. The worsening of Ms. Javadi's physical condition comes at a time when, prior to her imprisonment, doctors at a public hospital had issued a certificate of her inability to endure imprisonment, which was not accepted. Azam (Nasrin) Khazari Javadi was arrested on May 1, 2019, during the International Workers' Day gathering in front of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and was temporarily released from Qarchak Varamin Prison on June 8 of the same year after posting bail. Ms. Javadi was sentenced to a total of 7 years in prison and 74 lashes by Judge Afshari in Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tehran on charges of 'colluding to act against national security, disturbing public order and tranquility, and propaganda against the regime,' and this sentence was upheld by the appeals court. She was transferred to Evin Prison on July 2 of last year to serve her 7-year sentence. Currently, many imprisoned labor activists and teachers are suffering from serious illnesses, but judicial authorities oppose their medical leave and treatment.
