Iran's U-23 National Football Team Defeats Uzbekistan 3-1 in 2004 Athens Olympic Qualifiers

On May 3, 2003, the Iranian U-23 national football team achieved a 3-1 victory against Uzbekistan in the qualifiers for the 2004 Athens Olympics, according to ISNA. In this match, the Iranian team, consisting of Rahmati, Mobali, Madanchi, Barahani, Ebrahimi, Kabbi, Badavi, Nasrati, Kamali Mofrad, Navidkia, and Shafiei, faced their Uzbek opponents, who showcased elements of the powerful football typical of Eastern Bloc teams. The first half ended in a goalless draw. Despite some disorganization in Iran's midfield during the first half, the Iranian team capitalized on the weaknesses of the Uzbek defense, which appeared fragile due to four defenders standing on a straight line. In the first 15 minutes of the second half, Arash Barahani scored two goals. As the match continued, with Iran clearly dominating possession, Iman Mobali scored another goal for Iran. However, in the final minutes of the match, the extensive presence of Iranian players in the opponent's field allowed Uzbekistan to score their only goal. The return match between the two teams is scheduled for June 7 in Isfahan, and given the result of the first match, Iran's advancement to the final stage of the tournament is already predictable.
